What is Endometriosis?
If you're dealing with intense and unexplained pain around your menstrual cycle, you could be suffering from endometriosis. This disorder occurs when endometrial tissue, which normally lines the inside of your uterus, starts growing outside the uterine cavity. During menstruation, this tissue gets trapped inside your body instead of being expelled, leading to symptoms, like severe pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, discomfort during sexual activity, infertility, and pain during bowel movements or urination. At Wonderfully Made Women's Health Care, Dr. Charlene Williams is ready to diagnose and manage your condition to improve your quality of life. Visit us at our Huntington Woods, MI office to explore your treatment options.
How is Endometriosis Treated?
While endometriosis is a manageable condition, it's important to note that there is no definitive cure. Treatment focuses on alleviating pain and symptoms with common options, including hormone therapy, endometrial ablation, and surgery. Hormone therapy may involve birth control pills, patches, or vaginal rings that deliver a steady dose of hormones to slow down the growth of endometrial tissues. An intrauterine device (IUD) can also be used for this purpose. Endometrial ablation employs either freezing or heating techniques to reduce the thickness of endometrial tissues in a minimally invasive laser procedure. If these treatments don't provide sufficient relief, surgery may be considered as a last resort. In this procedure, tiny incisions are made in the abdomen to insert a light and camera, allowing Dr. Williams to identify and remove excess uterine tissues.
What are the Symptoms of Endometriosis?
Endometriosis manifests through a variety of specific symptoms. Typical indicators of endometriosis can consist of:
- Pelvic pain ranging from moderate to severe
- Abdominal bloating
- Fertility issues or difficulty conceiving
- Discomfort in the lower back
- Excessive bleeding during menstruation
- Pain during sexual activity
